I no longer want to be addressed as former AIDS Ambassador – Joyce Dzidzor

Former AIDS Ambassador Joyce Dzidzor has made a significant announcement, revealing her decision to step away from the title she once embraced passionately.

This shift in identity signals her desire to redefine her public persona and distance herself from the stigma and misconceptions surrounding her HIV/AIDS status.

Having served as an AIDS ambassador for over a decade, Dzidzor played a pivotal role in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and advocating for those affected by the disease. However, her decision to relinquish this role reflects a personal evolution and a desire to move beyond the label that has defined her for so long.

In an exclusive interview on Adom FM’s Work and Happiness show, Dzidzor candidly expressed her weariness of the stigma and constant questions about her HIV/AIDS status. Despite being HIV/AIDS negative, she has faced skepticism and judgment from others, leading to frustration and emotional strain.

Reflecting on her past advocacy work, Dzidzor emphasized her initial intention to educate and save lives through her advocacy efforts. While acknowledging the positive impact of her sensitization programs in reducing HIV/AIDS statistics, she also revealed the toll it has taken on her mental health, battling depression and enduring ongoing stigma.

At the age of 22, when she first became an ambassador for HIV/AIDS in Ghana, Dzidzor did not anticipate the enduring stigma and misconceptions that would follow. Despite not being coerced into the role, she now regrets the long-lasting effects it has had on her life and desires to move past the stigma surrounding her health status.

Dzidzor’s decision to distance herself from the title of AIDS Ambassador marks a significant moment of personal growth and self-assertion. As she navigates this new chapter in her life, she hopes to break free from the stigma and misconceptions that have overshadowed her identity for too long, reclaiming her autonomy and shaping her narrative on her own terms.
