Power outages negatively impacting businesses, tackle the problem immediately.
The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has articulated the detrimental effects of the ongoing power outages on businesses within the country.
In a recent statement, the union underscored the widespread repercussions of the power interruptions on the economy, emphasizing its pervasive impact across various sectors, including agriculture, trade, and industry.
GUTA highlighted the challenges faced by manufacturers in maintaining production schedules and workforce planning, attributing these difficulties to the inconsistent power supply. The union further noted that the erratic power supply not only escalates production costs but also exacerbates living conditions for the populace.
Quoting from their statement, GUTA expressed concern over the plight of traders, shop owners, wholesalers, tailors, dressmakers, electricians, artisans, and others reliant on electricity for their business operations. The union emphasized that the phenomenon, commonly referred to as ‘Dumsor’, has created a dire situation for businesses nationwide.
Furthermore, GUTA called upon the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to address several key queries regarding the power outages:
1. Identification of the root cause(s) of the intermittent power outages.
2. Details of ongoing efforts to rectify the situation.
3. A clear timeline for resolution.
Additionally, GUTA urged ECG to provide a reliable timetable for the power outages to facilitate better business planning.
The statement also raised concerns about the safety implications of businesses resorting to generators during power outages. GUTA emphasized the necessity for prompt resolution of the ‘Dumsor’ crisis to mitigate risks associated with alternative power sources.
In closing, GUTA expressed solidarity with all those affected by the power crisis and urged the government to take immediate action to alleviate the hardships faced by the business community.
