Exciting news emerged from Africa as US Vice President Kamala Harris touched down in Ghana for a three-day official state visit, expressing hope that her visit will build on previous meetings with some of the continent’s leaders in strengthening democracy, promoting peace and security, and fostering economic growth. She will also be visiting Tanzania and Zambia in the course of the week.
In her words, “We have a lot of work ahead of us and again, I’m so very excited to be here and I thank you all for the very warm welcome.” Harris sees great opportunities for Africa, given what is happening on the continent and the fact that the median age is 19 years old.
During her visit, she will be focusing on increasing investments on the continent, specifically in the areas of economic empowerment of women and girls, entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, and supporting the work that must be done to increase food security, including adaptation to the effects of the climate crisis.
Harris had previously met with Ghana’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Tanzania’s Suluhu Samiya, and Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema in 2021. Her latest trip aims to build on these previous meetings, strengthen democracy and good governance, promote peace and security, and strengthen business ties.
The partnership between Africa and the United States is set to reinforce the work they will continue to do together, addressing climate change, supply chains, and international rules and norms. The visit is a testament to the remarkable leadership and commitment of both countries toward creating a brighter future.
