Tyla Wins 2024 MTV VMA for Best Afrobeats with Hit Single “Water”

South African rising star Tyla has continued to make waves on the global music scene, winning the 2024 MTV VMA for Best Afrobeats with her chart-topping single “Water.”

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter, whose infectious track has resonated internationally, expressed her pride in the win during her acceptance speech, calling it “a significant moment for Africa.”

Tyla emphasized the global reach of “Water” and how it showcases the ability of African music to break boundaries.

“Water made an international impact and demonstrated that African music can also be pop music,” she stated. However, she also highlighted the importance of recognizing Africa’s musical diversity beyond the Afrobeats genre. “Like, this is just so special but also bittersweet, because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats. African music is so diverse, it’s more than just Afrobeats,”

Tyla added.

On the same night, Taylor Swift dominated the MTV VMAs, taking home seven awards, tying for the most overall wins. Eminem also made his mark by claiming the title for most solo male artist wins.
