The EC’s errors are deliberate – Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) to take into account the concerns raised by all political parties regarding the current voters’ register.

In light of the ‘Enough is Enough’ protest organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized that the demonstration was supported by other political parties, all of whom believe there are significant issues with the register that need to be addressed. Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated that the EC’s errors are “deliberate” and must be resolved before the situation worsens.

“The concerns of all the political parties must be seen to by the Electoral Commission,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe urged, adding, “the Electoral Commission is not above the laws of this country.”

He highlighted that the errors in the register are intentional and that without the NDC’s intervention, the election results could have been compromised.

“I listened to a gentleman from my party defending the indefensible. You can see clearly from his statement that the EC has committed an error and they are not willing to correct it, an error which I will call deliberate. If it had not been detected by the NDC, we would have a different result after the election,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe remarked.

The NDC’s demonstration, which was held on September 17, 2024, aimed to demand a forensic audit of the voters’ register, which the party claims is bloated and contains numerous irregularities. Among the anomalies cited were illegal voter transfers discovered during the exhibition process. The protest spanned all 16 regions of Ghana, signaling the party’s strong dissatisfaction with the EC’s refusal to audit the electoral roll.

During the demonstration, there were reports of injuries sustained by some participants in the Ashanti Region, with claims of a police shooting incident. While the police have denied any use of firearms during the protest, the NDC’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, rejected the police’s account in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.The growing tension between the political parties and the EC continues to attract attention, with stakeholders calling for transparency and fairness ahead of Ghana’s upcoming general elections.
