Teachers Demand Payment of Legacy Arrears, Threaten Demonstration
A group of teachers recruited between 2012 and 2015 is demanding the government fulfill its promise to pay their legacy arrears, expressing frustration over years of delay.
Despite numerous assurances, these teachers have yet to receive their entitlements, causing growing discontent within the profession.
In 2020, the government cleared arrears for teachers recruited between 2016 and 2019. However, those recruited earlier, between 2012 and 2015, were left out despite repeated promises to settle their payments. After patiently waiting for years without resolution, the aggrieved teachers are now calling on the government to pay their arrears in full or face serious consequences.
“Is it only three things that we are seeking for; payment of our legacy arrears in full, provision of a clear timeline for payment, and ensure that all affected teachers receive their entitlements by November?” said Nana Opoku Foster, President of the group, during an interview with 3news.com.
The teachers warn that if their demands are not met, they will have no choice but to embark on a demonstration, followed by picketing at Jubilee House, the seat of government. As the deadline approaches, tensions are rising, and the teachers are prepared to take further action if the government does not address their concerns.
