President Mahama to Reassess National Cathedral Project Amid Cost Concerns

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to review the controversial National Cathedral project, raising the possibility of completing it at a significantly lower cost if necessary. Speaking at his first National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 12, 2025, the President questioned the project’s current price tag and suggested alternative approaches to its completion.

Citing comparisons to similar edifices in other countries, President Mahama highlighted the disproportionate cost of the project, which has been estimated at $400 million. He referenced the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, which serves all Christian denominations and was constructed at a cost of $30 million. “This project must be completed at a reasonable cost. Given the current circumstances that Ghana is facing, it makes no sense to undertake such a project at a whopping sum of $400 million,” Mahama stated, emphasizing the need for fiscal prudence.

President Mahama also hinted at the possibility of relocating the project from its current location in the heart of Accra to a more suitable site.

“Such a reconsideration of this project might even include changing the current site that was chosen for the project,” he remarked.

He stressed that the construction should not involve public funds, advocating for a collaborative effort among Christians to fund the project privately.

The National Cathedral project, initiated under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, faced significant controversy after $58 million in state funds was reportedly spent on its foundation, despite assurances that it would be privately funded. The project’s Board of Trustees, composed mostly of religious leaders, saw several resignations amid allegations of financial malfeasance. President Mahama’s commitment to revisiting the project signals a fresh approach to resolving its challenges while fostering unity among stakeholders.
