Nana Yaa Jantuah Slams Akufo-Addo Presidency as a ‘Mistake,’ Criticizes State Honours

Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah, former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has labeled the election of William Kwaku Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Ghana’s President a “complete error” and a “mistake.” Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show Maakye on Thursday, January 2, 2025, she expressed her disappointment with recent national honours conferred under President Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming they undermine the integrity of the awards.

Her criticism follows the state honours ceremony on December 30, 2024, during which President Akufo-Addo presented accolades to distinguished Ghanaians, including Members of Parliament Mavis Hawa Koomson (Awutu Senya East) and Bryan Acheampong (Abetifi). Both were recipients of the Order of the Volta, a decision that has sparked public outrage. Critics, including National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, argue that such awards should be reserved for individuals with remarkable contributions to national development, rather than what they perceive as politically motivated inclusions.

Jantuah echoed these sentiments, stating,

“Akufo-Addo is a mistake. Ghana we made a mistake for voting for him. Nana Addo is an error. He is a complete error which we voted for. I didn’t understand what he did two days ago, that those who did nothing meaningful in your government, you award them,” she chastised.

The public relations expert and politician further pointed to these actions as evidence of broader failings in the Akufo-Addo administration, calling for introspection and accountability. The debate surrounding the national honours has reignited calls for a transparent and merit-based system to restore public trust in such state recognitions.
