Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah Appointed Chief of Defence Staff by President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the appointment of Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah as the Chief of Defence Staff, effective Thursday, February 1, 2024.

This appointment comes following the imminent completion of the tour of duty and retirement of the current Chief of Defence Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, on the same date.

The official press release from the presidency, signed by Director of Communication Eugene Arhin, stated that the appointment of Major General Oppong-Peprah is subject to consultation with the Council of State, as stipulated by Article 212 of the Constitution of the Republic.

Simultaneously, President Akufo-Addo has appointed Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona as the Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, effective February 1, 2024. Like the appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Onwona’s appointment is also subject to consultation with the Council of State.

Prior to his new role, Major General Onwona served as the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

The press release affirmed that Rear Admiral Issah Adams Yakubu and Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe will continue in their positions as Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff, respectively.

These appointments signal the leadership changes within the Ghana Armed Forces, aligning with the President’s commitment to maintaining a strong and effective defense structure for the country.
