Mahama Criticizes Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government for Lack of Accountability and Calls for National Reset
National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has criticized the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, claiming it“lacks integrity, transparency, and accountability.” Speaking on behalf of Ghanaians, Mahama asserted that the current government’s refusal to accept responsibility for economic hardships it has imposed on citizens reveals a concerning lack of accountability.
“It still believes and insists it is not responsible for the damage to our economy,” he noted, emphasizing that the administration’s denials have deepened the nation’s suffering.
Mahama linked these challenges to extensive government borrowing and the Bank of Ghana’s alleged overprinting of currency. He reminded the administration of the toll taken on Ghanaians due to these actions, stating,
“They will not accept that compelling the Central Bank to print more than GH¢70 billion increased inflation to about 54%, leading to the Bank of Ghana posting a loss of over GH¢60 billion.” According to Mahama, the national debt has ballooned from GH¢120 billion in 2016 to GH¢767 billion in 2024, with little to show in terms of development.
Addressing attendees at the ‘I Speak Governance’ forum in Accra, Mahama pointed to rising poverty under the current government, referencing World Bank data that over 870,000 Ghanaians have fallen below the poverty line. The Ghana Statistical Service further reports that 1.7 million citizens are now considered multi-dimensionally poor. Mahama argued that this decline in living standards is a direct result of the government’s mismanagement, which has left the nation grappling with extreme poverty and economic instability.
Calling for unity, Mahama urged Ghanaians to seize the upcoming election as an opportunity to “reset” the nation. “My dear brothers and sisters, at this crossroads, we have no option but to unite—as one people who put our nation first—to give us a chance to succeed.” He underscored the importance of restoring integrity in governance and reaffirming democratic values, stating, “For Ghana to be successful again, there is an urgent need to reset our governance and democratic systems. This can only happen if this current NPP government is rejected at the polls on 7th December.”
