A tragic incident has occurred in the Tulwe traditional area of the Central Gonja district in the Savannah region, resulting in the death of a sub chief identified as Mujipewura. According to reports, the sub chief was allegedly murdered by unknown assailants in the late hours of Thursday, March 30, 2023, over a land dispute between the Tulwe traditional area and the Kakpande traditional area.
The two traditional areas have been embroiled in a long-standing land dispute, which has been ongoing for the past decade and is currently being heard before the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs. The deceased sub chief was reportedly keeping watch over the land for the Tulwe paramountcy when he was attacked.
The killing has heightened tensions in the area, with residents expressing concern about the incident. A resident, Karim Awudu, noted that “The killing of the chief has heightened tension in the area.”
Although the perpetrators of the crime have not been confirmed, suspicion has fallen on the people of Kakpande, as the people of Tulwe traditional area believe that they may be responsible for the attack.
The Savannah Regional Minister and Chairman of the Savannah Regional Security Council, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, led a delegation of REGSEC to visit the newly enskinned Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale at his private residence in Damongo on Wednesday, March 29. The Minister appealed to the new Yagbonwura to intervene in the ongoing land dispute between the Tulwe and Kakpande traditional areas.
“Jira, the land dispute between Tulwe and Kakpande is a big issue for us, and since you are from the Tulwe area, I am sure you are privy to this issue, and I want you to support us in restoring peace in the area,” he pleaded.
The incident is a tragic reminder of the need for peaceful resolution of disputes, and the relevant authorities must work to ensure that justice is served in the case of the slain sub chief.
