Government Reacts to Viral Sammy Gyamfi-Nana Agradaa Video: “We Take Public Sentiment Seriously”
The Ghanaian government has officially responded to public concerns following a viral video showing Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), gifting dollar notes to controversial evangelist Nana Agradaa. The gesture, which has triggered widespread backlash, is being addressed at the highest levels of leadership.
In an interview on Citi FM, Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu assured citizens that the incident is being treated with “utmost seriousness.”
“Generally, as a government, we respect the sentiments of Ghanaians,” said Kwakye Ofosu. “We know that since the airing of the video, various sentiments have been expressed.”
The government’s swift reaction includes a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who summoned Sammy Gyamfi to the Presidency on Monday, May 12, for a detailed explanation of the controversial cash handover. Though Gyamfi has since apologized—describing the act as a private gesture of kindness never meant for public display—many Ghanaians remain unconvinced, especially given the current economic climate. Minister Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that this administration is determined to uphold higher standards of accountability and transparency, a principle it believes separates it from previous governments.
“We’re a government that is committed to governing the country in a different manner and holding ourselves to high standards,” he stated. “This shows that people expect a much-needed departure from the free fall that happened under the NPP administration.”
The Minister also confirmed that President John Dramani Mahama will be fully briefed upon his return to Ghana, after which any necessary actions will be taken to address both the incident and the broader concerns surrounding leadership conduct. As the conversation around ethics in public service continues, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of perception and responsibility—especially for those in high office.
