Ghana Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union Warns of Possible Unrest Amid Violent Attacks by Police Outriders

The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has issued a stern warning in response to a growing wave of violent attacks on its members by police outriders.

During a press conference in Tema, Union Chairman George Teye Nyaunu highlighted the alarming frequency of these assaults, which have left several drivers injured and raised serious concerns about their safety on the roads.

Nyaunu recounted a particularly severe incident in which a tanker driver was gravely injured after being attacked by police outriders. According to reports, these outriders have been throwing stones at drivers who fail to stop at specific locations as demanded, putting both the tanker operators and other road users in grave danger. Despite multiple attempts to engage the Inspector General of Police on the matter, the union has expressed deep frustration over the lack of response from police authorities.

“We have made several attempts to discuss these issues with the Inspector General of Police, but there has been no response,” Nyaunu stated, labeling the police’s inaction as “alarming and unacceptable.”

The attacks have sparked widespread concern among tanker drivers, who describe feeling increasingly vulnerable while performing their duties. Driving heavy trucks already comes with inherent risks, and the hostile actions of police outriders have only exacerbated these dangers. Many drivers have shared their harrowing experiences, with some fearing for their lives each time they are on the road.

The Union is calling on authorities to take immediate steps to address the situation and ensure a safer working environment for its members. Without swift intervention, the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has warned that it may be forced to take matters into its own hands, which could lead to further unrest and disruptions on the nation’s roads.
