Ghana Military Dismantles Massive Illegal Mining Settlement in Western Region

The Ghana Armed Forces have demolished a concealed illegal mining community known as Abrewa Ne Nkran, situated within the Subri River Forest Reserve in the Western Region. This settlement, home to over 10,000 residents, was primarily established by both Ghanaian and foreign nationals engaged in unauthorized gold mining activities.

Beyond illegal mining, the enclave was reportedly associated with various illicit activities, including human trafficking, child exploitation, prostitution, and money laundering. Notably, the community lacked basic social amenities and was absent from official national records.

The operation is part of a broader initiative by the Ghana Armed Forces to combat illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” which has led to significant environmental degradation. Recent reports indicate that nearly 3,000 hectares of forest land in the Takoradi enclave have been destroyed due to such activities.
