Ghana Freedom Party Flagbearer Disqualified Over Irregularities in Nomination Documents

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the flagbearer candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), citing errors and alleged irregularities in his nomination documents. The announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa during a press conference on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, following a thorough review of the party’s submission.

Jean Mensa disclosed that the GFP was given an opportunity to correct the identified issues; however, certain discrepancies were deemed too significant to be overlooked.

“Despite the efforts by the GFP to address some of the discrepancies, certain elements of Mr. Kubi’s documentation were found to be illegitimate under Ghana’s electoral laws,” she stated.

This development follows a challenging period for the GFP, which recently lost its founder and initial flagbearer, Akua Donkor, who passed away on October 15. After her passing, the EC granted the party a 10-day extension to nominate a replacement candidate. Philip Appiah Kubi was selected but faced immediate scrutiny over his documentation.

The EC noted that the irregularities discovered in Mr. Kubi’s nomination extended beyond clerical mistakes, prompting his disqualification under Ghana’s electoral regulations.

The decision has sparked discussions about the GFP’s future as the party navigates the dual challenges of leadership transition and electoral compliance ahead of the December 7 general elections.
