Electoral Commission Dispels Rumours of Agenda to Reduce Candidates for 2024 Election
As the Electoral Commission (EC) concludes the filing process for Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, concerns have emerged about a potential hidden agenda to limit the number of candidates.
Addressing these speculations, Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Commissioner of the EC, has firmly dismissed the claims, reassuring the public that the Commission’s process is transparent and impartial.
“There is no agenda like that,” Dr. Asare stated, emphasizing that the Commission’s only role is to ensure that all candidates meet the required legal standards. “The rules are there. Once you meet the requirement, you go through. The Commission doesn’t have an interest in intentionally reducing the number,” he added.
With a record number of 22 candidates filing by the close of submissions, this election season has seen heightened attention on the EC’s handling of the vetting process. Dr. Asare assured the public that the vetting is based on adherence to established rules, emphasizing, “Once you qualify, we go ahead and put you on the ballot.”
This response from the EC aims to clear any misconceptions about the Commission’s intentions in the lead-up to Ghana’s highly anticipated 2024 elections.
