Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, Founder and Head Pastor of The Maker’s House Chapel International, has voiced the need for practical solutions to address the ongoing issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
In a recent exclusive interview with Bola Ray on STARR Chat on Star FM, Dr. Nyamekye emphasized that while prayer is important, it alone cannot solve the deep-rooted challenges of galamsey, which are tied to poverty and widespread destruction.
In 2022, a video surfaced showing prominent members of the clergy at a galamsey site in the Eastern Region, praying for an end to the illegal mining activities. The initiative, led by several high-profile religious leaders, aimed to show their strong opposition to the environmental devastation caused by galamsey.
However, Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye underscored that while spiritual interventions are valuable, tangible alternatives must be provided to those engaged in the illegal activity. “If we want to stop galamsey, there should be alternative solutions,” he said, advocating for a comprehensive approach to tackle the crisis.
The visit by the clergy to the galamsey sites was to witness firsthand the scale of the destruction caused by the mining activities. Among the clergy present were the immediate past Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Bishop Dr. Paul Boafo, Presiding Chairman of the Assemblies of God, Rev. Dr. Paul Frimpong Manso, and Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.
Apostle Eric Nyamekye also called for strong political will and multi-dimensional solutions to end galamsey, which continues to devastate farmlands, rivers, and arable lands across Ghana. Both leaders agree that addressing this complex issue requires a balance between spiritual guidance and practical actions that provide hope and sustainable alternatives for those affected by galamsey.
