Asamoah Gyan’s Marriage Dispute: DNA Test Confirms Paternity in High Court

In a significant legal development, the Accra High Court has brought closure to the protracted legal dispute between former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, and his ex-wife, Gifty Gyan, concerning property matters. The culmination of this legal battle marks the annulment of their marriage, initiated by Asamoah Gyan’s petition to the court.

Following a thorough and successful DNA test, the results unequivocally confirmed that all the children in question are indeed the biological offspring of Asamoah Gyan, settling a crucial aspect of the dispute.

Presided over by Justice Hafisata Ameleboba JA, the Accra High Court upheld Gifty Gyan’s entitlement to a portion of Asamoah Gyan’s assets, given her substantial contributions during the course of their marriage. As a result, Gifty Gyan is now granted ownership of a house in the United Kingdom, a four-bedroom residence in Spintex, Accra, a gas station, and two vehicles.

The court’s decision was based on the premise that Gifty Gyan had made tangible contributions towards the acquisition of these properties. She had been the primary caregiver for their children and had lived with them while Asamoah Gyan pursued his professional football career. Consequently, the court deemed it fitting to award her a share of these assets.

In addition to the property allocation, the court has ordered Asamoah Gyan to provide a monthly maintenance fee of GH¢25,000 to Gifty Gyan. Notably, the court declined Gifty Gyan’s request for alimony, opting to focus on the maintenance fee instead.

The legal wrangle began when the Ghanaian football legend filed for divorce at the High Court and vehemently denied fathering their three children, prompting a demand for a DNA test to ascertain their paternity. The subsequent DNA test conclusively established that Asamoah Gyan is the biological father of all three children.

In its final judgment, the court considered the evidence presented and affirmed that the marriage between Gifty and Asamoah Gyan, which initially began as a paper marriage in 2002 when Gifty was 17 years old, could not be annulled on these grounds. Instead, the court declared the marriage valid and still in existence.

As part of the court’s decree, the marriage celebrated in 2013 was officially annulled. Furthermore, it was established that the couple had been in a romantic relationship since 2003 and had already welcomed two children prior to formalizing their union through an ordinance marriage.

The court’s ruling, particularly with respect to Gifty Gyan’s substantial contributions to Asamoah Gyan’s property, underscores the principle of fairness and equity, acknowledging her vital role in the family unit. Consequently, Gifty Gyan’s entitlement to a share in Asamoah Gyan’s assets, including a UK property, a gas station in Prampram, a four-bedroom house at Spintex acquired prior to their 2013 marriage, and two vehicles, has been firmly established by the court.
