Alexander Afenyo-Markin Confirmed as Minority Leader for Ghana’s 9th Parliament

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially confirmed Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, outgoing Majority Leader, as the Minority Leader for Ghana’s 9th Parliament. This decision follows the party’s poor performance in the December 2024 elections, which saw the NPP secure less than one-third of the seats in Parliament, relegating its caucus to the Minority for the next legislative session.

Afenyo-Markin’s confirmation came after strong backing from key party figures, including outgoing First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, who advocated for the Effutu lawmaker’s leadership continuity. Known for his strategic thinking and parliamentary experience, Afenyo-Markin’s appointment signals the NPP’s intent to maintain robust leadership even in opposition.

The National Council also approved the leadership structure for the outgoing Majority caucus, transitioning them into their new roles as Minority leaders. Patricia Appiagyei has been appointed Deputy Minority Leader, with Frank Annoh-Dompreh as the Minority Chief Whip.

Supporting them are Habib Iddrisu as 1st Deputy Whip and Davis Opoku as 2nd Deputy Whip, forming a leadership team tasked with steering the party’s agenda in Parliament amidst a challenging political climate.

As the NPP navigates its new position as the Minority, Afenyo-Markin and his team are expected to leverage their legislative expertise to ensure effective representation and hold the Majority accountable. This leadership shift marks a critical phase for the party, with significant implications for Ghana’s political landscape.
