Miley Cyrus Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Copyright Infringement on Bruno Mars’ Hit Song ‘When I Was Your Man

Miley Cyrus is facing a new lawsuit alleging that her hit song “Flowers” plagiarized elements from Bruno Mars’ 2013 single *”When I Was Your Man.”

Filed in a Los Angeles federal court on Monday, the lawsuit was brought forward by Tempo Music Investments, which claims to own part of the U.S. copyrights to Mars’ song. According to the complaint, “Flowers” contains unauthorized “exploitation” of several musical and lyrical elements from Mars’ song, including melodic and harmonic similarities, bass-line patterns, and chord progressions.

The lawsuit also targets Sony Music Publishing, Apple, Target, Walmart, and other companies involved in the distribution of “Flowers.” Tempo Music argues that the success of “Flowers” was significantly aided by its resemblance to *”When I Was Your Man.”* The complaint highlights similarities in the structure and tone of both songs and asserts that Cyrus, along with co-writers Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack, created a “derivative work” without permission.

While Bruno Mars is not directly involved in the lawsuit, the complaint stems from the claim that Tempo Music acquired the rights to the song from Philip Lawrence, one of the co-writers. Representatives for Miley Cyrus have yet to respond to the allegations.

This lawsuit adds to ongoing debates about copyright in the music industry, as artists and songwriters continue to navigate claims of musical influence versus outright copying.
