South African rapper AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, died at the age of 35 after a fatal shooting in Durban. His passing was confirmed by his parents in an Instagram statement over the weekend.
According to the BBC, Forbes was shot at close range outside a restaurant in Durban, where another man identified as entrepreneur Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane also died at the scene.
The police stated that AKA and his friend were approached by two armed individuals and were shot as they walked to their cars. The suspects then fled on foot, according to Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a police spokesperson.
The South African Police Service in Durban did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The South African Police Service reported that two men, aged 34 and 35, were killed in a shooting at Florida Road in Morningside, Durban, on Friday evening. The motive behind the shooting is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing, according to the police statement.
AKA’s parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes confirmed the death of their son in a heartfelt statement on social media. They described their loss as “extreme sadness” and shared that Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend, and most importantly, a father to his daughter Kairo.

The statement went on to mention that Kiernan was loved by many and gave love in return, and that he was known to his fans as AKA, SUPAMEGA, BHOVA, and many other names. The Forbes family is awaiting further details from the Durban police.
The BBC reported that the police are investigating the murders, but they don’t want to speculate on the motive behind the shooting.
AKA has made a lasting impact on the music industry with his unique sound and style. Starting his career in the early 2000s as part of the group Entity, AKA quickly established himself as a solo artist with the release of his debut album “Altar Ego” in 2011.
