According to the Daily Graphic, at least five persons have reportedly passed away after consuming a dinner of waakye, or rice and beans, that they purchased at a restaurant at Oyibi Bush Canteen Junction in Accra.

According to reports, some 40 people were affected, and five of them, including a pregnant woman and a lotto vendor, passed away.

When the victims, which included the waakye vendor known as Yellow Sisi and some of her family members, complained of having a severe stomach ache after eating the meal last Friday, they were taken to Valley View Hospital, Oyibi Hospital, Dodowa Hospital, and other facilities.

One of the most popular food outlets at Oyibi Bush Canteen is the Yellow Sisi Waakye establishment.

When the Daily Graphic team arrived, it noticed that the joint was silent and the kiosk was locked. Some shops near the food joint were also shuttered since it is thought that the shop owners, who also ate the food that day and experienced adverse effects, were being treated at the hospital.

When the Daily Graphic followed up with Valley View Hospital for confirmation, hospital officials confirmed the occurrence, stating that a number of patients were brought to the hospital in critical condition but that “as of today, all of the patients have been discharged,” according to an official.

The Kpone Katamanso District Hospital received the hospital’s data and was conducting more investigation to determine the source of the issue, but the Valley View Hospital officials were unable to provide sufficient information regarding the number of patients who may have been impacted.
